Big Thief - UFOF

-----
We are going to listen to UFOF today.

From the lyric, I guess, it’s about UFO friend.

Some sounds that sounds like going through heavy reverb and reversed, plus the consistent guitar high arpeggios, make this song a mysterious floating feel. The melody of the vocal sounds like drifting above the backing, somehow makes me think of Indian music.

Although, I usually won’t be attracted by music with folk flavors, I like this one.

Jungle - Heavy, California

This time we are going to talk about Heavy, California by Jungle.

This song can be deem a dance song with electronic base. While using the electronic materials, they mixed it with band sound, which helps the music avoiding the anxious and mechanical feeling that pure electronic music often has. This creates a modern vintage feel. It’s not bad.

Listen: Nilüfer Yanya - Thanks 4 Nothing

但其實我最喜歡的歌詞“‘Cause I don’t want to make things better.

-----

This song starts with electronic drum and guitar to bring out a rhythm with bossa nova feel, which (maybe) should make me feel relax, but the whole sound make me feels cold. The chorus begins with lower energy without the drum, but brings it back in the later part with spacious, acoustic, barely compressed sounding drum. The rhythm used in this part often used when the music is trying to build up the energy, but it just lets the energy go and goes back to verse.

Really interesting arrangement, which aligned with the lyrics and also delivered the emotion trying to deal with one’s ex. It feels like you are going to be fitted by a far far straight punch, but it just disappears in front of your eyes, leaving you ,who tried to be calm, in a cold sweat.

Actually, I like the lyric”Cause I don’t want to make things better. Thanks for nothing lasts forever ” most. Although it can be interpret as a serious abandon to their relationship, it is so misanthropic to look alone. Hope someday I can use these words to write a song.

Listen: Rex Orange County - Sunflower

Sunflower

I honestly don’t even know why“的念法,相當讓我喜歡,確實地表示出了不解與困惑。

---

In the beginning of this song, the Vinyl sound and triplet makes me think about King Krule… I don’t really know why,

It turns into a bright groovy song unexpectedly, although there a little melancholy feeling behind the scene, which makes me fascinated. The horn section in chorus is also pretty interesting. But what I like the most is the bridge. It’s like narration rather than prevailing rap. Especially the way he spells out “I honestly don’t even know why.” conveys the confusion feeling so well.

The music video reminds me those days in the south California and the beach cruiser that’’s too expensive that I couldn’t afford.

Listen: Sangpuy(桑布伊) - The Power of Life

This time in Listen we are going to talk about Sangpuy’s “The Power of Life”.

Sangpuy is an established indigenous singer from Taiwan. “The Power of Life” is a song from his album “Yaangad” released in 2016. It is based on the song, “The Root of Life”, which is the first song of this album.

It feels like “The Root of Life” is a song singing the melody of life. Without complex backing instruments, the melody sung by Sangpuy alone, is full of the power of nature.

But “The Power of Life” takes it to a totally different place with an attempt to give it some electronic touch. It’s like all the rumbling sounds are trying to build up an image of endless sprouting of the mother nature. Although it is a quite opposite choice, the song is still really fascinating.

---

這次Listen要聊聊桑布伊的《The Power of Life》。

《The Power of Life》是根基於《The Root of Life》 這首歌,而這兩首歌都收錄在2016年的專輯《椏幹》中。

感覺上《The Root of Life》是一個永唱生命的歌曲。

Listen: Chet Baker - Lament

Lament

---

This time in Listen, we are going to talk about Lament by Chet Baker.

This version is included in the album Live& Rare. There is not much information about this album on the internet, which (by the name) I suppose is a album that puts some rare live version of songs together.

Lament is a live trio versions. Chat Baker on trumpet, Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on double bass, Philip Catherine on guitar. The reason I want to talk about this version is that the conversation between instruments is so fluent. They comp for the lead and fill the empty space perfectly. Also, the guitarist use continuous arpeggio in some surprising timing, which is really interesting.

Listen: Mac DeMarco - One More Love Song

One More Love Song

---

This is a calm and broad song about failed love. It doesn't fee like one learned something or let the feeling go, but accept the failure like "maybe that's it?", which makes me think about the movie <9 songs>.

The arrangement and development of this song is pretty simple, which suits the topic well. The loose swing 16th feel of the rhythm section and the guitar's accent of 2nd 16th note of every beat 1 push the song slowly forward like wave by wave. The synth melody in the intro feels like one still laughed at oneself, but the piano in the chorus makes the space broaden and carry out the emotion.

Although compare to this song, his live performance is quite interesting in a special way. Maybe this is some kind of gap moe?

Listen: Tennis - No Exit

EP “We Can Die Happy”。

---

This song is included in the EP "We Can Die Happy" released by Tennis in last month.

It sounds like Fleetwood Mac with contemporary composing concept and Lo-Fi sounds. In the beginning, the dry hi-hat combines with wet vocal and keyboard, which gives me a confusion of time and space that rotates with the keyboard sound. When the wet hi-hat and guitar riff come, band in, it's time to dance.

In the first chorus, my emotion rises with the keyboard, but it goes even higher with 16th note rhythmic post chorus part before moving back to interlude.

While, in the second post chorus, they drop out the band and return to the verse with the basic grooving. In this grooving, they start to sing "We die dance tonight." and goes to the last 16th post chorus with the rising emotion.

So good, it's like a dessert after meal, sweet but not sickly.

The whole EP is pretty good, like Dream pop sound with retro taste. It worths to check it out.

Mr Jukes - Grant Green ft. Charles Bradley

At first, I clicked this song just because the thumbnail and the cowbell in the intro was so cool. I didn’t expect something this good.

This song is filled with soul!

Charles Bradley’s ebullient sining meets the groovy arrangement from Mr Jukes. A brilliant combination gives me an imaginative experience, just like the colorful and surreal music video.

By the way, don’t forget to check out Grant Green’s music. They also sampled one of his songs in the intro.

---

The Clientele - Everything You See Tonight Is Different From Itself

---

Because of the sound and beats in the beginning of this song, the following chord sounds like it is made by a electronic music instrument, too. It takes me a while too realize that it is a sound of some kind of string instrument, which is really interesting and a good combination between analog and digital sound.

The instrumental background sounds a bit cold, but after the vocal comes in, it feels like "a cold background with determinate warmth". The whole song basically maintain this kind of feel, though there are hard and twisted chord sometimes, it will compensate with strings or horns.

It feels like "In a freezing night, though the wind and cold make  you shiver, you still walk forward firmly."A song with a vivid image, nice one.

Vijay Iyer Sextet - Nope

----
I ran into this song when I started to look at some information about ECM. What a coincidence.

The atmosphere in Intro is basically bright though mixed a little unstable feel. But some really tensioned notes started to stack up, release with a cool riff and laid-back feel drum groove.

This is too cool! It is just too cool to not like this song with this kind of intro.

Through out this song, the conversations between instruments are really rich and layered elaborately, which makes it exciting all the way to the end and still expanding.

This is a song worth to listen to! Strongly recommend.
