This time “technique from songs” is going to use Love Yourself by Justin Bieber to talk about open feel comping with barre chords.
Since there are already quite a lot videos are helping you to play this song, I am going to talk about this song in different way. About how to get the open feel comping in the verse.
Here is the progression of the verse.
As we can see, if we just play what we see on the chart, it will just be some barre chords with an interesting rhythm.
But we get an idea from the song, we play only the 5th and 2nd string, to achieve the open feel in the song!
Although, we can see most of the chords as a combination of root and a 3rd one octave higher, it’s actually easier to just skip some strings when you are trying to come up with a rhythm p art like that.
So let’s put this concept to a different chord progression and change the rhythm a little bit. I will use the chord progression form That’s How You Know by Nico & Vinz.
